The Friends of the Maverick Library will hold a used book sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, October 16 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, October 17, 2010 at Maury Maverick Jr. Branch Library, 8700 Mystic Park, San Antonio.
Most books are priced at $1 or 50 cents, with some special books priced higher and some bargain-priced at 25 cents. Other items may be sold. The book sales are the friends’ primary fundraisers and usually are held twice a year.
Money raised supports the library in areas the city is unable to fund. Past donations by the friends include furniture, computer and office equipment, benches, a reading circle rug, book and CD carts and racks, display cases, a camera, office supplies, costs of conducting some programs, and refreshments for library activities.
Donations of gently used books are accepted on an ongoing basis, except during the book sale, at the library circulation desk. Books needed for the library’s collection are added to it, and other donated books are sold. A few leftover books may be donated after the sale to senior centers, nursing homes, hospitals, and non-profit groups.
The friends work closely with library staff to meet library needs. Anyone interested in helping the library, whether or not a member of the friends, is welcomed at regular friends meetings at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday each month at the library. Membership applications are available at the circulation desk in the library.
