Corpus Christi Rayz Hockey Rout Jackalopes

RAYZ SCORE SEASON-HIGH IN 8-2 ROUT OF JACKS SEVEN GOAL SCORERS LEAD CORPUS CHRISTI PAST ODESSA

Exactly one week after setting a season-high for goals scored, the Corpus Christi Rayz reached yet newer heights on Saturday Night against the Odessa Jackalopes.  The Rayz had seven different goal scorers as they routed the Jackalopes 8-2 in the second straight game between the clubs.  Corpus Christi snapped a four-game losing skid with Odessa and earned their 25th win on the year.  The Rayz inched within six points of first place with a 25-17-5 record after the Laredo Bucks lost in overtime to Rio Grande Valley.  The Rayz win was their tenth in the last 13 games, and sets the stage for Sunday’s match-up for the top two teams in the Southern Conference when the Rayz travel to face the Bucks.

Unlike Friday Night’s game the Rayz jumped all over the Jackalopes in the opening stages of the rematch.  Geno Parrish scored a power play goal on a one-timer from the blue line at 2:14 to open the scoring.  The Rayz added to their lead at 3:26 when Chris Mei scored his second of the season from the right point.  The Jacks got on the board late when Jay Latulippe found a loose puck of a deflection and slammed it into the net at 18:27.  Corpus Christi recaptured their two goal advantage with a late tally from Matt Turek at 19:08.  The Rayz outshot the Jacks 18-15 in the opening frame.

In the second period, the Rayz continued to pile on the offense.  Derrick McIver finished off a shorthanded two on one with Justin Quenneville at 1:39 of the period to give the Rayz a 4-1 lead.  The Rayz upped their advantage to 5-1 when Turek got his second of the game on the power play at 5:54.  Odessa got another late period goal when Nathan Ward scored from the slot at 17:41 to make the score 5-2 Rayz.  Corpus Christi outshot Odessa 14-12.    In the third period, the Rayz capped off the season-high effort with another trio.  Adam Powell scored at 2:37 from between the circles to give the Rayz a four-goal lead.  At 16:00, Quenneville scored a highlight reel goal on a gorgeous move, fooling Odessa netminder, Mike Gorman for his team-leading 23rd goal of the season.  Ryan Carter capped off the eight-goal performance with his fifth tally in the last six games from the right circle at 17:20.     Brent Zelenewich got the win for the Rayz, making 32 saves on 34 shots.  He improved to 10-8-2.  Gorman surrendered all eight goals on 43 shots and took the loss, falling to 12-14-3.  The Jacks loss was their tenth in the last 11 games.  The Jacks fell to 17-23-4.  The Rayz outshot the Jacks 43-34.  The Rayz went 2-3 on the power play and the Jacks went 1-6.
